Richard Joshua was born in Cape Town South Africa, where he was constantly involved in art since childhood. His studies in graphic design contributed to the development of his artistic talents.
Upon completion of his tertiary education he worked as a graphic designer and later as an art teacher. It was while he was teaching art and interacting with students that his passion for painting led him to focus more on developing his skill as an artist and dedicated himself in learning the techniques of oil painting.
Since 2018 he has immersed himself in finding his expression and essence as an artist, with various subject matters from still life to landscapes, cityscapes and portraits with the use of light to dramatically highlight specific points in his compositions.
He is inspired by the colour, patterns and elements of culture and its strong connection to history. Using his creative expression he documents a moment in time that connects to the past, but also engages with the present. He finds ‘abstract realism’ as a means of capturing the essence of his emotions and each painting as an exploration and a journey to discover new and surprising visual representations.
