Richard Joshua was born in Cape Town South Africa, where he was constantly involved in art since childhood. His studies in graphic design contributed to the development of his artistic talents.
Upon completion of his tertiary education he worked as a graphic designer and later as an art teacher. It was while he was teaching art and interacting with students that his innate passion for painting led him to focus more on developing his skill as an artist and dedicated himself in learning the techniques of oil painting.
Since 2018 he has immersed himself in finding his expression and essence as an artist, with various subject matters from still life to landscapes, cityscapes and portraits with the use of light to dramatically highlight specific points in his compositions. He is also drawn toward a particular palette that tends to define the style of his entire body of work. His art is a mixture of light, colour, mark making and creative exploration.
It is this light falling on an object and the use of colour that sets the tone and mood of his paintings, expressing and externalising his emotions to communicate his essence to the viewer.
